QUALITATIVE RESEARCH AND GIS
CALL FOR PAPERS

We are organizing a session on Qualitative Research and GIS. The session
focuses on the integration of qualitative research with GIS through the
presentation of case studies of current
applications such as the construction of cartographic narratives, historical
life maps, and algorithm and model building, as well as addressing the broader
epistemological, theoretical, ethical and ontological questions associated with
combining qualitative research and GIS.
Paper topics may include:
* Qualitative research and public participation GIS research
* Qualitative inquiry, geographic visualization, exploratory data analysis
* Constraints and progress in qualitative research and algorithm and model building, and data representation
* Epistemological discussions of limitations, adequacy, advantages and disadvantages of GIS and the representation of qualitative knowledge
* Intersections or disjunctions between qualitative and GIScience epistemologies and theoretical underpinnings
* Qualitative and GIS software package integration
* Impact of qualitative research and methods on GIS decision-making and analysis
* GIS and ethnographic research: incorporating qualitative data into geographic databases
* GIS and the construction of cartographic narratives, historical life maps, spatial stories
We encourage submissions that address recent critiques of GIScience as well as those demonstrating practical examples of integrating qualitative methods with GIS research and the use of GIScience in qualitative research.
Please submit your abstract of no more that 250 words, according to AAG specifications to LaDona Knigge (lknigge@acsu.buffalo.edu )and Mei-Po Kwan (kwan.8@osu.edu), as well as to AAG's online submission system at: www.aag.org/AnnualMeetings/Intro.html.
