From the President’s Desk:
The good things
.

What pleases me most about my role in UCGIS is the dedication and willingness of a fairly large number of people to get involved in the organization. Whatever success UCGIS has achieved is due to the efforts of these people to make good things happen. In no special order, many of the good things are:

  • The global indicators continuation grant.
  • The outstanding and sensitive program in Washington, D.C. last February at a very delicate time in American history.
  • The sincere interest in doing something for Homeland Security.
  • The joint sponsorship of the superb GIScience 2002 meeting in Boulder.
  • The plans for meetings in Washington, D.C. and Asilomar for February and June 2003, respectively.
  • The Summer Assembly in Athens that consumed people’s interests in striking out into new GIScience challenges.
  • The impressive progress being made on developing the Model Curricula.
  • The continued and positive participation in FGDC and other extra-organizational activities such as the US-Mexico Bi-National Urban Planning organization and the Joint Statistical Meetings.
  • Our representation in Europe at AGILE and in the US at CSISS.
  • The further development of our web site.
  • The new benefits brochure.
  • Grants from our commercial members for young scholars, homeland security, and the model curricula.
  • The recognition of remarkable scholars for researcher and educator of the year awards.
  • The development of a long term approach for strategic planning.
  • Our continued interest in expressing our point of view to congressional representatives and government agency leaders.

It takes many people to plan and carry out all of these activities. Perhaps too much is done by too few, but the door is wide open for you to get involved. Let the board know of your willingness to take on UCGIS responsibility.
