GIS Day Coming November 20, 2002

by Suzy Jampoler

UCGIS is a sponsor of GIS Day. The day is grassroots event during which geographic information systems (GIS) users and scientists open their doors to showcase applications of this important technology. In the past, many of our universities have participated. If you are planning an activity, please let me know so that we can post it on the UCGIS site. Send an email to execdir@ucgis.org .

Summer Assembly 2003
Asilomar Conference Center
Monterey?s ?Refuge by the Sea?

by Suzy Jampoler

The Summer Assembly will be held June 16-20, 2003 in Pacific Grove, California, at the Asilomar Conference Center.

The Summer Assembly was originally designed to be a retreat where delegates could meet and exchange ideas on the important research and education issues in GIScience. Asilomar will provide a uniquely quiet retreat setting. Although it is located near scenic 17-Mile Drive and Monterey it is removed from daily demands. The facility is designed free participants from everyday interruptions. Rooms do not include televisions and telephones. The buildings in the retreat harmonize with their natural environment, and provide a contemplative environment for the assembly.

All meals are provided during the meeting. Participants will have access to many recreational activities, including walks along the boardwalk and beach, swimming in the outdoor heated pool, hiking and shore-side whale watching.

The assembly will begin on Monday afternoon, June 16th, with committee meetings, and conclude in the afternoon of Thursday, June 19th with the Council meeting. (Board meetings will be held Monday and Friday mornings.)

New Web Page and Database Coming Soon

by Suzy Jampoler

UCGIS is updating its web page format and underlying databases.

In addition to the current features, the site will have a Member Only section that will include current opportunities open only to UCGIS members, job postings, GIS links, UCGIS member contact information, an expert database, and on-line dues payment.

Many of the links (for example to delegates, committee membership, expert database) will come from the member database. This database will need to be updated. I will be asking lead delegates to check their delegate list and make any changes necessary.

The start of the academic year is a good time to review your delegation. Each member has a lead delegate, a second delegate, and an unlimited number of alternates and members. Lead and second delegates vote at Council meetings. Alternates can vote if a lead or second delegate is not present. Individual members are anyone interested in GI Science at your institution.

Everyone is encouraged to be a member of the Education, Research, and/or Policy Committees.

We will be recompiling the following lists:

  • Member Institution
  • Lead Delegate (voting, main contact point for the institution)
  • Second Delegate (voting)
  • Alternate Delegates (vote in absence of lead or second delegates)
  • Members (interested individuals at your institution)
  • ALL (anyone interested in GI Science whether from a member institution or not)
  • Committee memberships
  • Billing contacts

Many of our members have a GIScience group or consortium on campus. These groups meet on a regular basis to discuss university issues related to GIScience. I encourage you to meet with your group—or form a group—to increase the interest and presence of GIScience on your campus. This meeting, whether physical or virtual, can help you to identify those who should be in the UCGIS database. Remember that membership in Education, Research and Policy is open to anyone at your institution. Most of the business of these committees is conducted by email. Encourage people to join!

Once the web site is up and operating, there will be fewer messages to the ALL list, and you will be able to check for UCGIS news easily. Look for the new site in late October. An announcement will be made to the ALL list.
