REPORTS FROM COMMITTEE CHAIRS

Student Paper and Poster Sessions at the Assembly
John Wilson
Research Committee

The Research Committee has arranged student paper and poster presentation sessions for this year's Assembly that will be folded into the program for the GIScience 2004 Conference. These sessions have been featured at all of the past assemblies with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary discussions among computer science, engineering, geography, natural resources, physical science, social science and other academic programs engaged in geographic information science research. One student was selected from each UCGIS institution to receive a travel stipend to attend these meetings. This year travel awards will be made to fifteen graduate students representing Clark University, Indiana University, Ohio State University, State University of New York at Buffalo, University of California at Berkeley, University of California at Santa Barbara, University of Colorado, University of Georgia, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of Tennessee at Knoxville, University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, and West Virginia University. Three student papers were selected for presentation in a concurrent session specially designated for the best three student-authored UCGIS papers, and sixteen additional students were selected to present their work in a poster session. Those students selected to present papers and posters were also required to prepare an article for the electronic proceedings that has been posted to the UCGIS website. The editors of Cartography and Geographic Information Science (CAGIS) and Transactions in GIS (TGIS) will select two of the three manuscripts to be presented in the student paper session for publication in upcoming issues of their journals. Additional awards will be made for the best two posters presented at the conference as well.
