The assembly opened with the award ceremony to congratulate Keith Clarke, the recipient of the UCGIS Educator of the Year Award, and Max Egenhofer, the recipient of the UCGIS Researcher of the Year Award, for their admirable accomplishments http://www.ucgis.org/summer03/. Lars Kulik and Tom Cova won the Young Scholar Award sponsored by Intergraph. Christopher Pyke and Matt Duckham won the Young Scholar Award sponsored by ESRI http://www.ucgis.org/summer03/

The award ceremony was followed by the annual GIScience Bowl at dusk, on the beach of Pacific Ocean and by the side of a bonfire. A team of four students won this competition http://www.ucgis.org/News/awards/GISBowl2003.htm

The main events in the following two days featured a series of presentations, workshops, and student presentations to address cutting edge topics in GIScience. Six senior scientists from Civil and Environmental Engineering, Information Science, City and Regional Planning, and Geography addressed the assembly and held workshops to discuss current research issues http://www.ucgis.org/summer03/workshops.htm. A total of 28 students from 17 member institutions participated in a two-day student presentation to report their research projects http://www.ucgis.org/summer03/studentpapers.htm.

The summer assembly was well attended by researchers and students across the country, from both member and non-member institutions. Everyone enjoyed the beauty and tranquility of the Pacific Coast, met friends old and new, and looked forward to the Summer Assembly 2004 http://www.ucgis.org/summer03/photos/Photos.htm.
