Request for Applications to Deliver SPACE Workshops
Organized by UCGIS

Synopsis of the program:
SPACE (Spatial Perspectives for Analysis in Curriculum Enhancement) is an NSF-funded program of the Center for Spatially Integrated Social   Science (CSISS) at the University of California at Santa Barbara . SPACE is dedicated to the dissemination of spatial analytic approaches in undergraduate social science programs and is described more fully at www.csiss.org/SPACE. UCGIS will select member institutions to deliver SPACE Workshops in 2005 and 2006. The focus of the workshops will be on the topic of "Introducing GIS for Undergraduate Course Enhancement in the Social Sciences." UCGIS will organize two SPACE workshops in 2005 and three workshops in 2006. The first workshop in 2005 will be one week in duration, and the second workshop in 2005 will last 2-3 days. Three workshops planned for 2006 are contingent upon the availability of funding. Each of the 2006 workshops will last 2-3 days. The UCGIS host institution will organize the workshops in cooperation with CSISS to meet the objectives of the SPACE program. This will include the development of course materials and the delivery of course materials to workshop participants. The participants, selected from the applicants to CSISS, will be university instructors who have undergraduate teaching responsibilities in the social sciences.

Eligibility of institutions: All UCGIS member institutions are eligible to apply.

PI Eligibility: Any faculty member affiliated with a UCGIS member institution is eligible to apply.

Number of awards: One award ($29,975) is available for 2005. A second award is planned for 2006, but it is contingent upon the availability of funding to CSISS from NSF.

Duration of support: January 1, 2005 to August 30, 2006.

How to prepare an application: Please follow NSF's 'Grant Proposal Guide' to structure your proposal. The guide can be downloaded at www.nsf.gov/pubs/2004/nsf042/start.htm. Please limit your project description to five pages (instead of the 15-page NSF limit) and make sure that you have all the elements required by an NSF proposal before submitting it for this competition. Please include the materials indicated below in your proposal.

2.     A discussion of the location and probable date(s) of the workshop, availability and cost of lodging for 25 participants, availability of computers and software for 25 participants for the duration of the workshop;

3.     A statement of how the workshop will be organized and conducted;

4.     A description of the exact topics covered by the workshop;

5.     An estimated total budget;

Special requirements: Please note the special requirements related to the workshops while preparing your proposal.

1.     Only social science faculty members with interest in undergraduate course development will be eligible to participate in the workshops. Workshop leaders should provide plans on how the instructional development objectives of the workshop will be met.

2.     CSISS will provide partial funding to assist participants with lodging and travel expenses but participants are expected to find other sources to cover any shortfall.

3.    CSISS will support the grant recipient to attend the SPACE Planning Meeting, scheduled for 10-11 December 2004, at the Upham Hotel in Santa Barbara . The objectives of this meeting will be to review the results of the 2004 workshop program and to coordinate the 2005 programs of the host institutions ( Ohio State University , UCGIS, and UCSB).

4.    Where and when to send application materials: Please send all application materials in a single file (in either MS Word or PDF format) via electronic mail to: Dr. F. Benjamin Zhan, UCGIS Sponsored Programs Committee Chair, zhan@txstate.edu, by 25 September 2004. Please place the following in the subject line of your e-mail to assure correct processing: UCGIS-SPACE Workshop.

Selection procedure: Members of the UCGIS Sponsored Programs Committee will assemble a panel to review the submitted applications. The panel will rank the applications. UCGIS officers and members of the UCGIS Sponsored Programs Committee will make the final decision based on the recommendations from the panel. A decision will be made by the end of October 2004.
