FGDC Coordination Group Representatives.

In response to Dept. Assistant Secretary Scott Cameron’s call for participation (below), the Geospatial One-Stop publication team requests your assistance in supporting the Hurricane Katrina Community at geodata.gov (http://gos2.geodata.gov/).

We ask that you identify agency online geospatial data resources that have yet to be published to geodata.gov and provide direct support to Hurricane Katrina response or assessment including (in order of significance):
-        Live Data and Maps (dynamic web mapping services)
-        Applications (data visualization and exploration sites)
-        Data download sites (download and ftp sites )
-        Clearinghouses (data and metadata catalogs)
-        General information websites

including ‘For Official Use Only’ (FOUO) and sensitive data. Note that publishers have the ability to password protect IMS sites. It is important to publish these resources so that those in need can identify and request permission to access the information.

To support you in this effort we have developed the attached Quick Guideentitled: Geospatial One-Stop Quick Guide: Publishing Hurricane Katrina-related Online Data and Application, that outlines a step-by-step method for identifying unpublished resources, registering as a publisher with the new portal site at (http://gos2.geodata.gov/), creating/publishing a brief metadata record for the resources, and nominating the resource for the Hurricane Katrina Community site.

Also, if you are aware of others that have Katrina-related online geospatial data resources (state, regional, or local partners) please forward the attached Quick Guide and encourage them to publish via geodata.gov.

If you need assistance in publishing your resources or have questions, please contact one of the GOS publishing advisors below:

Subject: Your geospatial data can help facilitate Katrina relief and recovery

To Geospatial One Stop Federal Partner Agencies,

Please support Hurricane Katrina relief and recovery efforts by helping populate the Geospatial One-Stop Portal (GOS) with existing and planned geospatial data.  GOS has developed a preliminary Hurricane Katrina community (www.geodata.gov) where we can all participate in providing policy makers, GIS users, and citizens with useful geospatial information. Each of your agencies has contributed in various ways to get the GOS Portal operational, now it is time to show its value as a data discovery and decision support tool in a time of national need.   In particular, the Marketplace feature of the portal can allow us to stretch the total funding available for acquiring new data, and ensure that we all can benefit as soon as possible from those new data acquisitions.  The Federal Geographic Data Committee soon will send a similar request to the Steering Committee.

We have the opportunity to show the value of geospatial data and related resources in an organized and easily accessible manner.  The tools and vision are in place, but we need your help to “make it real”.  I am requesting that you get involved in the following ways:

1.    Assess your agency’s information activities –- anticipated data purchases and existing data -- related to Hurricane Katrina to ensure that all activities are documented with metadata, and that metadata is published as soon as possible to the GOS Portal.  The kinds of information activities we are looking for include; geospatial data sets, imagery, live web mapping services, links to relevant existing web sites, contractors that are planning, or in progress, of collecting new data sets, tabular data bases that might assist social services, housing, etc.

2.    If you don't feel fluent in the use of the Portal, just call us, tell us what you have or are planning to get, and we will help you get it on the Portal.

3.    Consider assigning a person from your agency to work with GOS on the organization of the Hurricane Katrina community to ensure that it meets your agency-specific needs.  We view this as an opportunity to organize a team of interested individuals who will work closely with GOS over the next couple of weeks to organize content in this community.

Please call (703) 648-4633 or (703) 648-5569 and ask for Hank Garie or Rob Dollison to volunteer, to learn how to share your data and metadata, or for further details on how you can get involved.  The people of the area affected by Katrina will greatly appreciate your support and contributions.

Thanks,

Scott
