3. Adoption of minutes of Saturday, June 23, 2001, Buffalo
- motion to approve minutes by Harvey, seconded by Buttenfield, accepted
4. Executive report – Onsrud
- a productive year, thanks to all
- we were involved in numerous projects during the year including 2nd Symposium on Global Urban Quality, DoT sponsored activity, ESF/NSF Public Participation in GIS meeting, Intergraph Young Scholars Program, ESRI Young Scholars Program, Homeland security initiative, numerous grants including HUD symposium, Vector Borne Disease symposia, planning for a GIS and sustainable development project, increased AGILE ties.

6. Committee Reports
6.1 Policy and Legislation – Merry and Craig
- John Schuller, Chicago, will post a website on upcoming legislation
- Will propose an Access to public information workshop to help us build policies for the GIScience web of information
- Our Congressional breakfast had 30 congress members’ staff in attendance
- Need to put presentations from the breakfast on the website
6.2 Research - Usery
- third year of student program at upcoming summer assembly: for this summer have received 33 abstracts from 20 universities.
- GIScience Research award nominations to be solicited soon for award this summer
- Will begin a new call for research challenges for consideration at this summer’s assembly
- GIScience 2002 meeting – UCGIS will serve as co-sponsor
- A book will be published to wrap up the original set of “Research Challenges of the UCGIS”, edited by McMaster and Usery, deadline for chapter submissions on Feb. 28th.
- Need to incorporate the emerging themes as part of the full list of research challenges.
6.3 Education - Wiggins
- a fall offering of a virtual seminar for UCGIS will be hosted by Chuck Ehlschaeger, Hunter College. Announcement to be posted very soon.
- Model curricula task force report – have submitted a summary of the work completed to date and requested a plenary session at the summer assembly
- GIS Educator award - committee established and request for nominations to come soon
- Information items
o URISA Special Issue on Education, edited by Wiggins and Kemp to be published in the summer ‘02
o The former GIS/LIS associations are working on a portfolio based professional certification program – www.urisa.org
6.4 Membership - Mark
- 75 members, including three members admitted today
o 66 full members: 62 academic institutions, 4 professional societies
o 6 corporate affiliates
o 1 international affiliates
o 2 government affiliates: USGS, DoT Transportation Statistics
o 12 states still not represented in membership
- 5 have applied for renewed membership
o Boston University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Hunter College CUNY, University of Maryland College Park, Texas A&M University Corpus Christi
o Board to act on these reapplications at Board meeting tomorrow
- Oak Ridge National Laboratory has decided not to renew membership - the first full member who has ceased to be a member
o Request for the Board to write a formal letter to ORNL regarding their lapsed status
- Expiring Feb 2002 – University of Arizona and University of Delaware
- Expiring June 2002 – American Congress on Surveying and Mapping
- Request for bylaw amendment to require all portfolios to be posted on the web
6.5 Communications – D. Wright

6.6 Research Projects – Rugg
- light load since Buffalo meeting, no new competitions
- Francis Harvey and David Tulloch have been asked by FGDC to continue work previously completed
6.7 Sponsored Projects Committee for Non-research
- established in the past year, to begin operation as of this meeting
- handled the Model Curriculum research proposal to NSF
- have now established UCGIS status with NSF FastLane for proposal submission
8. Recognition of outgoing officers - Onsrud
- Jeff Hamerlinck (Secretary), William Huxhold (Past-President), Barbara Buttenfield and Robert Rugg (Board members), Lynn Usery (Research chair), Dawn Wright (Communications chair), Stephen Hirtle (Nominating)
9. Report on future UCGIS meetings - Onsrud
- Mark and Onsrud to undertake a survey of delegates and other affiliates to get input on meeting options and needs with respect to UCGIS goals
10. Summer Assembly 2002 – Getis, Usery, Wiggins
- meeting at Georgia Center, hotel and conference facility on U. Georgia campus
- www.uga.edu/ucgis has information about the assembly
- program to include ˝ day for Education and remaining time for Research
- Board will prepare schedule tomorrow
11. Statements and announcements by affiliate members and guests
- Randolph Franklin from NSF mentioned CARGO solicitation to be reposted, DARPA preparing an initiative called GEO* which includes Geopotential and Geospatial reasoning.
- Intergraph by Susan Nolan – best practices and student poster competition for this summer’s event in June with $500-$1000 awards
