From the President’s Desk

Since our February meeting UCGIS has been engaged in a variety of activities to benefit our membership. During this same time, Suzy Jampoler, after five years of exceptional service to UCGIS, resigned as Executive Director. I take this opportunity to thank Suzy for all her work, which has helped establish UCGIS as the premier organization for GIScience in the U.S. I hope all of you will join me in thanking her for her service and wishing her well in her new endeavors.

With Suzy's departure, Carolyn Merry chaired a successful Search Committee and UCGIS hired John (Jack) Sanders as our new Executive Director. Jack has spent August and September getting oriented and is now actively preparing for the UCGIS Assembly. The Assembly is also different this year because it is being held in conjunction with the GIScience 2004 Conference. This moved the date from our normal late June to October 20-24. The Assembly is being conducted in the conference facilities of the Adelphi Conference Center of the University of Maryland. A complete schedule is available on the UGCIS web site.

Among the activities included in the last several months, a major accomplishment was the completion of the HUD grant with a successful workshop in Guadalajara, Mexico, in July and a final report to HUD. Art Getis and John Weeks completed a successful SPACE workshop in early August and will host a follow-up workshop at our Winter Assembly in Washington in February 2005. UCGIS has held several competitions including one for the 2005 SPACE workshops, a USGS post doc position, Intergraph grant, young scholar awards, student paper awards, and competitions for Researcher and Educator of the year. Also, appearing in August from CRC Press is the book of UCGIS research challenges,  A Research Agenda for Geographic Information Science. This book is a comprehensive compilation of the UCGIS efforts to establish a research agenda over the last several years. The book is the collective effort of over 40 scholars and represents a significant contribution from UCGIS. As our activities and efforts for GIScience research and education continue to expand, we invite all delegates to join us in our Assemblies and competitions.

Jack Sanders Named UCGIS Executive Director

Jack Sanders was selected as the new Executive Director for UCGIS in August 2004. A former sociology professor, Jack has taught at Salem College and Wake Forest University, and was Director of Institutional Research at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, City University of New York. He was a Ford Foundation Fellow at the University of Massachusetts, later becoming Vice President of the National Association of Independent Schools, the association of private boarding and day schools. Jack then became Executive Director of Independent Educational Services, a nonprofit organization providing consulting and recruitment services to schools. As a consultant, he has managed numerous projects – for the Water Environment Research Foundation, developing partnerships with state environmental agencies; for the Home Builders Institute, establishing a workforce development program for residential building; for the Electronic Data Initiative for Nonprofits, an enterprise funded by the Ford, Carnegie, Kellogg, Rockefeller Brothers and Packard Foundations. He also worked in the Internet world as National Director for Partner Services at Epylon Corporation, an e-commerce company financed by Accenture and Deloitte consulting firms and other venture capitalists. Jack’s undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Georgia.
