UCGIS 2005 Virtual Seminar in Ethics for GIS Professionals

In Fall of 2005, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science and Worldwide Universities Network co-sponsored a “Virtual Seminar in Ethics for Geographic Information Systems Professionals.”

More than 50 students from five graduate programs shared presentations by guest speakers via desktop Web conferencing, contributed to Web-mediated asynchronous discussions, and participated in weekly local face-to-face discussion sessions.

Participating programs included Penn State University, The University of Minnesota, Oregon State University, Ohio State University, and the University of Wisconsin.

The seminar employed a “hybrid” delivery strategy that blended face-to-face meetings of students and faculty members at each institution with synchronous and asynchronous communications between institutions via the Web.

The seminar syllabus is published at https://www.e-education.psu.edu/courses/geog597e/syllabus.shtml  Links to recorded presentations are included.

A curriculum development grant provided by Penn State’s Rock Ethics Institute is gratefully acknowledged.
