UCGIS 2005 Virtual Seminar in Ethics for GIS Professionals
In
Fall of 2005, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science and
Worldwide Universities Network co-sponsored a “Virtual Seminar in Ethics for
Geographic Information Systems Professionals.”
More than 50 students from five graduate programs shared presentations by guest
speakers via desktop Web conferencing, contributed to Web-mediated asynchronous
discussions, and participated in weekly local face-to-face discussion sessions.
Participating programs included Penn State University, The University of
Minnesota, Oregon State University, Ohio State University, and the University of
Wisconsin.
The seminar employed a “hybrid” delivery strategy that blended face-to-face
meetings of students and faculty members at each institution with synchronous
and asynchronous communications between institutions via the Web.
The seminar syllabus is published at

to recorded presentations are included.
A curriculum development grant provided by Penn State’s Rock Ethics Institute is
gratefully acknowledged.
