Summary of the Education Plenary Panels, Summer Assembly 2007

by Steve Prager

The 2007 UCGIS Summer Assembly offered meeting attendees and UCGIS delegates two plenary sessions regarding current issues relating to GIScience education. The first plenary focused on "Geospatial Literacy Education" and emphasized a cross-section of issues centered around the role of geospatial literacy as a core component of university curricula. Talks ranged from discussions of the challenges and rewards associated with working GIScience and geospatial literacy into lower level courses to discipline specific approaches for incorporating and assessing GIScience in the curriculum.

The second plenary session focused on expanding educational opportunities for students by "Integrating GIScience Teaching and Research." Speakers in the second session illustrated a variety of examples and case studies where students' learning experiences were directly tied to either research or service related activities. Speakers addressed a range of GIS and remote sensing examples and discussed how the integration of teaching and research resulted in lessons for both students and faculty. Collectively, the education plenary sessions served as a valuable resource to the UCGIS by providing examples, resources and contacts to support community members' own efforts in enhancing their GIScience and related curricula.
