Universities today are nodes in the global knowledge economy and consequently play a role in numerous social processes. From migration policy to water usage, the modern research university is far from a separate, aloof ivory tower. Understanding the multiple overlapping roles and functions of the university require innovative mapping techniques. Over the past five years, the Counter- Cartographies Collective has developed a form of counter-mapping as a way to understand modern research universities and to highlight alternatives and potential improvements. In this talk, we discuss some of our counter-mapping interventions, and their possibilities for university teaching and learning.
