John P. Wilson is Professor of Geography and Director of the GIS Research
Laboratory at the University of Southern California. He received his LLB in Law
from the University of Canterbury in 1976, his BS in Geography from the
University of Canterbury in 1978, his MS in Geography from the University of
Canterbury in 1979, and his PhD in Geography from the University of Toronto in
1986. After 13 years at Montana State University, including seven years as
Director of the Geographic Information and Analysis Center, he moved to Los
Angeles in 1997. He has served as the Managing Editor of Transactions in GIS
from its inception in 1996, and currently serves on the editorial boards of two
other journals and book series. His major publications include Terrain Analysis:
Principles and Applications (2000) and the Handbook of Geographic Information
Science (2005), and he is the author of some 90 scientific papers on topics
ranging from soil erosion and groundwater pollution problems to urban growth
modeling and the environmental and social characteristics of places and their
impacts on selected health outcomes. He is currently a member of the Board of
Directors and Chair of the Research Committee for the University Consortium of
Geographic Information Science and he is also an active participant in the
UNIGIS International Network, a worldwide consortium of 20+ institutions
collaborating on the development and use of geographic information science
learning materials for distance and distributed learning. His current research
interests center on geographic information science tool development, spatial
analysis, and environmental modeling.
