All TRELIS Gathering!

All TRELIS Gathering

We hosted an All TRELIS event at the Minnowbrook Conference Center in Blue Mountain Lake, New York, with members from all 4 cohorts in attendance as we celebrated our 5th year of activities and continue our post-COVID networking. Our trellis scaffolding needed this rejuvenation of TRELIS energy now more than ever!

SCHEDULE

  • Sunday afternoon/evening, June 5, 2022.  A bus will be available to bring members of Cohorts 1, 2, and 3 from the Syracuse Airport (SYR) up to Minnowbrook, departing SYR at 4 pm.  After check-in at Minnowbrook, we will begin our social connecting and reconnecting with a group dinner (at approximately 7 pm EDT).
  • Monday, June 6, 2022.  A busy day filled with both structured and informal sessions, with an emphasis on issues and problem-solving in our post-COVID professional and personal lives. Professional and research networking, and work-life integration re-envisioned.  Questions we will be discussing will include
    • How has the pandemic affected your career and your personal goals
    • How has your department & university responded to support your evolving needs?
    • Why is academia still a good and important place to build a career?
    • What does it mean to have research that is impactful and meaningful to you, post-pandemic?
    • Keynote SpeakerDr. Rachel Franklin, University of Newcastle, UK
Choose Your Own Adventure: Charting a Fulfilling Professional Path in the Geospatial Sciences

Navigating a career can feel confusing: Is there a right way to do it? How will you know if you’ve succeeded? What if you take a wrong turn?...and what even is a “wrong turn” in the context of a career? In the geospatial sciences and geography, these challenges can feel doubly difficult, as we straddle implicit (and explicit) expectations and choices that range from traditional academic routes to industry, non-profit, and government pathways. In this talk, I reflect on the importance of cultivating openness and self-knowledge—and networks!—from the perspective of my own non-linear career trajectory thus far. In doing so, I aim to provide a little advice and a lot of encouragement!

  • Tuesday, June 7, 2022.  Following an early morning breakfast, a bus will provide transportation for all TRELIS Participants down the mountain to the UCGIS Symposium 2022 at Syracuse University, which will begin mid-morning.
