Note: This is a part-time (20 hours/week, 12 months/year) and remote working position

Organizational Summary

The University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that creates and supports communities of practice for Geographic Information Science & Technology (GIS&T) research, education, and policy endeavors in higher education. Since its establishment in 1995, UCGIS emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the geospatial sciences, and the synergistic benefits of collaboration and cooperation across academic disciplines. We support the needs of our 60+ institutional and affiliate members institutions and aim to be the professional hub for the academic GIS community in the United States, with partnerships extending this capacity abroad. 

Position Summary

The Executive Director manages and oversees the organization, including the day-to-day activities and the strategic planning for the future. Along with the UCGIS President, the Executive Director serves as the public face of the organization and works closely with the Board of Directors and Committee Chairs to implement programs and develop resources, the ultimate purpose of which is to enhance and promote geographic information science, its technologies, and its diverse applications across higher education.

Responsibilities

The Executive Director directly supervises the activities and programs of UCGIS to achieve all organizational goals and objectives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Leadership

  • Oversees all programs, services, and activities to ensure that mission and program objectives are met. 

  • Gives direction to the formulation and timely progress of the organization’s long-range vision, mission, and strategic plans, in part by developing and maintaining institutional knowledge necessary to pursue and obtain such outcomes.

  • Serves as chief spokesperson for the organization, alongside the Presidential Executive Committee, and ensures that the organization is effectively engaging with current and future members, partners, and other stakeholders.

General Administration

  • Implements and follows effective and efficient administrative organizational practices for physical and digital communications.

  • Supports and maintains the operational functions of the organization through its information technology infrastructure, including the website and digital documents collections.

Business Development and Financial Stewardship

  • Develops financial plans and budgets to effectively operate, monitor, and meet the goals and objectives approved by the Board of Directors. 

  • Sustains and expands the financial strength of the organization through traditional membership relationships and new revenue-generating activities.

  • Develops and fosters relationships with corporate, academic, and government entities to secure support and funding.

  • Represents the organization in business negotiations, agreements, and contracts.

  • Coordinates with external professional services to manage financial operations and matters of legal compliance.

Board and Committee Relations

  • Assists the Board and Committees through management of meetings, elections and appointments, and communications of reporting requirements.

  • Supports the Board’s and Committee Chairs’ activities to advance the UCGIS mission and achieve stated organizational goals.

Services and Programs

  • In consultation with its annual Symposium program committee, oversees the planning and administration of the event.

  • Oversees and manages an annual collection of webinars, workshops, and other professional development opportunities.

  • Coordinates with the GIS&T Body of Knowledge Project Manager to promote and support the development and marketing of the digital resource.

  • Supports the Board and Committee Chairs in the administration of the annual Awards program.

  • Contributes to the administration of externally-funded programmatic activities, when necessary.

Public Relations and Communications

  • Coordinates with the Membership Committee to identify and recruit new members with a value proposition that is current, aligned, and compelling for our higher education sector.

  • In coordination with the Communications Committee, develop and maintain a comprehensive marketing program to promote the organization’s programs, services, and special events.

  • Represents UCGIS in the establishment and curating of organizational relationships with other geospatial organizations, and educational, industry, and partner organizations.

Professional Qualifications

  • Three or more years of managerial or administrative experience in an educational, non-profit, professional, or industry association or organization, preferably in a field related to GIS&T. 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university (Master’s or PhD degree preferred).

  • An ability to initiate, organize, and accomplish organizational functions while working remotely and independently.

  • An ability to respond to dynamic work demands with professionalism, flexibility, and a sense of humor.

  • Preferred familiarity with higher education environments and culture.

Compensation

This position is part-time and year-round. The position comes with a competitive compensation package.
