Nina Lam

Nina LamDr. Lam is an exceptional researcher whose innovative and impactful work has significantly contributed to many subfields in geographic information science (GIS). She pioneered seminal and landmark works in spatial interpolation, scale effects in remote sensing and GIS analysis, and fractals in deciphering geographic processes. Her recent research on community resilience through the development of the Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model is groundbreaking and opens up a new direction for GIScience researchers to understand the coupled natural and human system sustainability. This line of research, which started in 2015, has generated about 80 refereed journal articles and supported over 15 postdocs and PhD students from multiple disciplines. Dr. Lam’s intellectual legacy will continue to inspire generations of geospatial scientists to advance our understanding of fundamental GIScience concepts and their effective use in addressing societally important problems.

The UCGIS Research Award is to recognize a single contribution or a series of research works that are seminal and have significant impacts on Geographic Information Science community, while not being a lifetime achievement award.

UCGIS will honor Nina Lam and other award recipients as part of its Symposium 2022 programming activities.
