Map Projection as Mirror, Nostrum, Villain
Thursday, September 26, 2019, 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EDT
Category: Webinars

Shine a light through a globe. What could go wrong, eh? Quite a lot, it turns out. What is a map projection, really? Why so many? For that matter, how many are there? Which is the best? How do they affect people and society? What do the cool kids do with them? And, yeah. The Mercator. Wait. What? Wait, what was Google thinking!?

Presenter: Daniel “daan” Strebe is the author of Geocart, the map projection software that first came out in 1992 and has been available ever since. He was the founding chair for the International Cartographic Association’s Commission on Map Projections. He has written many essays on the topic, published many research papers on the topic, and is a bona fide survivor of odd adventures in map projections. He has lived in the Seattle area since 1996.

Registration: Registration is currently open only to individuals associated with UCGIS member institutions and will open to the public as space allows.
