Ling Bian
Dr. Ling Bian is awarded University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) Fellow status in recognition of her advancement of research, education, and community service in the broad geospatial community.
Dr. Bian has built an impressive record of scholarship over the years. Her early work on the scale effects on geographical analysis contributes to today’s understanding of scale issues. Her subsequent work on the ontology of geographic representation explains how geographical processes could be represented and how the representations of entities and processes interact. This line of research offers new insights into how theories and methods, especially those initiated from outside the discipline such as the object-oriented approach and individual-based modeling, could be adapted meaningfully for geographical analysis. Dr Bian subsequently expands individual-based spatially explicit modeling to health phenomena, which leads to a series of ground-breaking applications. Dr. Bian established a conceptual framework that defines heterogeneous individuals, individualized attributes, and individualized interaction and mobility behaviors in the spatial dispersion of diseases. The framework is considered effective in estimating localized outbreaks that are often the source of an epidemic and in identifying vulnerable individuals and communities facing serious health threats. The work has been supported by several research grants from NIH. The influence of this work extends to a range of studies on spatially dynamic phenomena, evident from the many citations in the literature across disciplines.
Dr. Bian is an effective mentor and teacher. She has served as the major advisor for 10 PhD and over 40 MA/MS students. Dr. Bian is a dedicated community supporter and contributor, performing numerous services for the geospatial community and agencies, including as the editor of the Geographic Method section of the Annals of the American Association of Geographers for two terms. Ling has actively contributed to UCGIS activities and decision making. She was a long-time UCGIS delegate, chaired the Communications Committee, and served on the Board of Directors and several Nomination Committees. In recent years, she has nominated and facilitated a number of UCGIS webinars to disseminate cutting-edge research topics in the UCGIS community. These activities further the mission of UCGIS, promoted the value of UCGIS within and outside the GIScience community, and advanced research in the field of Geographic Information Science.
Dr. Bian has made substantial contributions in advancing geospatial science through her scholarly work, her mentoring and teaching, and her numerous services to the UCGIS and related communities. UCGIS is very pleased to name Dr. Ling Bian as a UCGIS Fellow.
